It’s Mardi Gras! Today is the day for people to party down before giving up things for Ash Wednesday. This year we opted not to take Paige to New Orleans. Ronnie takes her most years. Unfortunately, he can’t get the time off from work this year. We’ll save our trip for in a couple more weeks when Mardi Gras is over. We want to take a trip to the zoo before it gets too hot and the animals spend all day in the air conditioned comfort of their indoor habitats.
Here’s your history lesson for the day. Where do you think Mardi Gras started? New Orleans? That’s what most people think. The truth is, Mardi Gras started in Alabama. In Mobile, Alabama to be specific. That’s right, before women were showing their boobs from cheap plastic necklaces in New Orleans, Mobile was throwing Moon Pie’s to the crowds. I know it’s hard to believe. New Orleans is what people think when they think of Mardi Gras, and I was the exact same way. Mardi Gras parades started in Mobile years before New Orleans was even founded. Mobile is more of a family friendly environment for parading than New Orleans.
Paige did ask when she was going to New Orleans this year for the parades, and we had to break it to her that she’s not going. We’ve taken her into Mobile a bit for a couple of parades. We’re considering taking her in again tonight for the last of the parades. They’ll probably be pretty good.
