Getting Disney Ready August 17, 2010

Now that we’ve decided we’re doing this, it’s time to start preparing.  I love to plan trips.  They’re fun.  They don’t have to be big huge week long vacations, just a couple of days away.  But I really get into the prep work of it all.  You know, finding a place to stay, things to do to keep us occupied, budgeting, all that good stuff.   In order to prepare for Disney I did two things immediately: downloaded an app to my iPhone and checked out the Unofficial Disney Guide 2010 from the library.

The app is great.  It’s got good tips on everything from where to find an ATM to what each restaurant serves, and how much they charge.  Definitely convenient when you’re on the go in Disney World.  The guidebook has the same info, but let’s face it who’s going to carry a 700 page book when they’ve got an app for it? Even I wouldn’t do that!  The guidebook has given me good tips on the best times to get character autographs and where to find the cute pink Mickey ears with the tiara on top.

Monday at work I was thinking and planning a bit.  One of the things that popped into my head is how much walking I’ll be doing that day.  And how much walking I don’t do on a normal day.  Then I got to thinking about my shoes.  I know, you’re thinking the same thing my friend Kelli did: any excuse for Angie to go shoe shopping.  Well, I had to.  My shoes are mostly work shoes.  Casual I have a choice of sandals, flip flops, Converse (hi or low and 3 colors to pick from), K Swiss (7 years old and no support left to speak of), and a pair of 12 year old Nikes that rub my toes and leave blisters if worn for too long.  None of those would do.  So after work I did the hard job of going shoe shopping.  Luckily, I found exactly what I was looking for right away.  I only had to try on 7 pairs of shoes at the sporting goods store.  I went in looking for Skechers, and walked out with my first pair of Adidas.  They have a gel cushion sole, great arch support, are mesh, and very lightweight.  And the best part was their sales price was firmly in my budget.

Monday night Ronnie and I put those new shoes to the test.  After Paige went down to sleep Aunt Wii listened out for her and off we went on a walk.  I’m happy to say I walked 1 1/4 miles tonight.  I only got winded once, walking up a very steep hill and trying to talk at the same time.  I got a bit winded, but easily recovered and finished out the lap.  Next time we may add a bit more to it.  I need to be able to do 5 or 6 miles in the heat.

Ouch! July 7, 2010

I’ve been off my Wii Active for several months now.  Of course, I’m starting to feel like a fat slob again, right at bathing suit season.  Last night was my first night back on a 30 day challenge.  My thighs are so sore today!  They’ve hurt all day.  Moving in certain directions isn’t fun at all.

On the plus side, my knee seems to be holding up so far.  Only one day, but at least it held up.  The arthritis in my left knee has been very bad lately.  I’ve upped my arthritis medicine, added two more, and been given pain killers and a muscle relaxer to help with it.  For me the fact that I exercised last night, and my knee isn’t swollen to twice it’s size and not bending in a normal manner is a big plus.  Let’s see if this can keep up!

 

Ouch! January 18, 2010

I’ve really slacked off on the Wii Active.  Not just over the last week or so when I was out of town, just overall slacking off.  I started back up tonight on the medium setting.  No easing back into it, I went full our medium.  I haven’t even tried hard yet and don’t plan on it anytime soon.  My thighs hurt.  I’m sure they’ll be worse tomorrow.  Those squats were just bad today!

 

Results November 23, 2009

I’ve been at this whole exercising thing for a week now.  I’ve done really good.  I did miss Saturday, but I had a good reason. I spent the day at my parents helping them. Both of them are sick at the same time, and they just needed some help.  By the time I got home, I didn’t have the energy to workout.  I’m OK with that.  But there are results to report this week.

Sunday is weigh in day.  I lost 3 pounds last week.  And I moved my belt in a notch.  When Aunt Glennis saw me Saturday the first thing she said was that I had lost weight.  So other people are noticing it.  I’m definitely feeling better about myself.  Let’s be honest, my scale is showing me numbers I’ve only seen while pregnant.  I’ve got to get smaller numbers on that scale.  Ultimately, I would like to lose 3 pounds.  I don’t know how reasonable that is. I’m going to start with a smaller goal.  For the holiday season, I would like to lose another 10 pounds.  Considering all the family meals, meaning the whole family of 40 plus people, and parties we have coming up, I think another 10 pounds by the end of the year is reasonable.

 

30 Day Challenge November 16, 2009

I’m embarrassed to admit how long it’s been since I last used my Wii.  I got Wii Fit when it first came out.  And I used it, but I got bored with it.  Same exercises over and over and over.  When Wii Active first came out I got that one too.   That seemed more my speed.  A dedicated trainer who worked out with you giving you a specific set of exercises to do.  I need more guidance.  Left up to myself I only played around and didn’t get much out of it.

Active has a 30 day challenge feature.  Each day the trainer gives you a full workout. Some days are more aerobic than others.  Each day is a full workout.  You work out 2 days, rest 1 for the full 30 days.  Starting each challenge gives you the option of easy, medium, or hard.  You set goals as well based on the number of calories you want to burn, number of workouts you want to do, and number of hours you expect to complete.  It’s a great tool, if you actually use it.  No, it’s not the same as going to a gym and working out with a real trainer.  I know myself well enough to know that I won’t use a gym membership, even when my company will pay for it if I go 8 times a month.  This can be done in my own living room, a much more appealing thought.

Today I started a new 30 day challenge.  Once again I’m repeating the easy challenge.  Even the easy challenge gives me a workout.  Less face it, accountants don’t get a lot of exercise at work.  The only part of me getting a good workout is my hands and fingers, as my carpal tunnel shows.  I’ve been slowly changing my lifestyle.  I started with my diet.  We’ve been eating healthier and watching our portion sizes.  Today started the exercise portion.  I didn’t want to start too much too fast. I knew I wouldn’t keep up with it.  This way, hopefully I will.
