Are we that lazy? February 15, 2011

Filed under: Whatever — scifimama @ 6:31 am

One thing about spending the day laying on the couch with full control of the remote is all the commercials I watched.  Normally we either watch a channel like Disney that doesn’t really have commercials, or something from the DVR where I can just fast forward through all the commercials.  Monday, I had the chance to actually watch grown up TV, complete with commercials.  And I discovered that Americans are more lazy than I thought.

Sorting laundry too much of a chore?  Use the Shout Color Catcher.  Only $4.58 for 24!  I see where they could definitely be something good to have around.  Especially if you have a new red or pink shirt to wash but not enough of those colors for a whole load.  But to use them with every load because sorting is too much for you?  And that’s what the lady on the commercial was saying, so that’s the target audience they seem to be going for.  I find that to be just a bit lazy.  Sorting laundry to me is not the worst part.  The worst part is the folding and putting away.

Too lazy to put on real clothes?  Or maybe you’re jeans don’t fit anymore, so you want something that always will.  Try the super expanding Pajama Jeans!  They may look line denim, but they’re super stretchy and feel like pajamas.  And no one will ever be able to tell.  Right, no one will ever notice they saw them advertised on TV and laughed at the commercial.

Then there’s pretty much everything at the As Seen on TV website.  You can get a shake weight, an electric potato peeler, perfect fit buttons to expand your non-pajama jeans, a Slim T to make you look slimmer, or a Ting Ting Uno to help you relax.  I couldn’t make this stuff up people.  There are some cool things there too.  We own a Pillow Pet.  And Paige is getting the mini unicorn Pillow Pet for Easter.  She’s been asking for a baby unicorn for her pet.  I’ve been eyeing the Gyro Bowl at Think Geek for close to a year now.  It looks like the most amazing snack keeper for kids.  I’m just waiting for my friends babies to get old enough to need one of those, then I’m ordering.  (Hmm, they’re offering 2 for 1 pricing and a friend has twins.  I could be ordering some sooner than I thought.)

Please don’t misunderstand.  I’m all for gadgets.  I like that technology has made things easier for us.  I could use the washer and dryer, or I could go down to the creek and wash my clothes on a rock.  I like the washer and dryer much better, thank you.  I’m happily addicted to my iPhone.  GPS is a good thing for the directionally challenged.  But I do think there are a few products out there that cross the line from helpful to making us lazy.  Take that extra 5 minutes and sort your laundry.  Put on an actual pair of jeans to go to the grocery store.  This spoken from someone who has a hard time finding jeans.  Do go ahead and order a Pillow Pet.  Your kids will love them!

Silly Winter February 3, 2011

I would call it something else meaning it’s not so smart, but we don’t use that word in our house.  This past weekend and Monday were so nice.  We had temperatures in the low 70’s and clear skies.  Tuesday it stormed all day.  My commute home was almost double the normal time because we were doing 55 and 60 all the way home.  And by “we” I mean everyone on the interstate, even the little Honda Civic that I saw racing through the cars like he was in a video game the day before.  By the way, that’s no exaggeration, he was racing another car and weaving in and out of traffic so much that if he couldn’t get around someone he passed them in the emergency lane.

Wednesday our high temperature was in the 40’s.  We had a 30 degree drop overnight.  I’m sure everyone will be sick again soon.  Yesterday I drove home in a bit of sleet and rain drizzles.  Luckily the hail was over by the time I got close to home.  A friend had texted to let me know hail had it her car that was so big it almost cracked the window and she looked around to see who threw a rock.  Then she realized it wasn’t a kid throwing rocks, it was the sky throwing large chunks of ice at her new car.

Thursday has a high of 36 with ice pellets.  I realize that some of my friends have 18 inches of snow or more, and their power is beng cut every hour and a half.  We’re lucky we don’t have to deal with that, certainly.  And I’m very thankful we don’t have snow or black ice all over the roads.  Especially with me having such a long commute each day.  It’s just that we had such warm, balmy weather that I was wearing flip flops.  Now I’m back to wearing heavy jackets and scarves.  That shouldn’t happen overnight!  I’m thinking Honduras is looking awful good this time of year.  Or Australia.  A friend down there said it was hot as an over at midnight last night.  Can I snowbird in Australia?  That would be a long commute for sure!

Very boring January 20, 2011

Most people probably won’t admit they’re boring, but I can.  I’m blogging this on Wednesday evening sitting on the couch, and will schedule it to post Thursday morning.  We’ve spent the week so far in the usual way: work, dinner, showers, bed.  Ronnie shook things up Tuesday by being diagnosed with bronchitis.  He’s not contagious, and caught it in the very early stages.  Lucky for us.

We’re sitting here watching Top Gear, which is as close as I come to being a car kind of person.  Let’s be honest, I picked my car based on the cute boxy style, amazing alien green color, the light up speakers, gas mileage, and the whole pretty good for the environment thrown in there.  I’ve been watching while blogging, playing Words with Friends and texting.  Can you say ADD?  I’m pretty good at the whole multi-tasking thing.

What is Ronnie doing you ask?  He’s sitting on the couch next to me, watching Top Gear, and sewing a unicorns tail back on.  Seems Paige has been swinging Steve the Unicorn Pillow Pet around by his tail and it came off today.  She was laughed at today in school.  Daddy made a quick trip to the fabric store and picked up some thick pink thread.  Steve’s tail will be happily back in place soon.  I’m thinking of changing Steve’s name to Eeyore. There will be no more swinging Steve by the tail.  Now to keep reminding her she can’t grab and swing him by the horn either.

Hopefully some of you are a bit more exciting that we are.  We have better plans for the weekend, of course.  But mid week?  We’re tired and don’t do much more than veg on the couch.

Back to Normal January 5, 2011

Filed under: Whatever — scifimama @ 5:54 am

At least back to as normal as we ever are around here.  Paige went back to school Tuesday and had Tae Kwon Do after.  Ronnie has been working almost a regular schedule even through the holidays.  I went back to work Monday, only at a new location.  When I got home from work on Tuesday it was the usual:  Ronnie had dinner cooked, Paige took a shower, we watched some Blue’s Clues, read stories, and Paige was in bed.

It’s probably boring to most of you out there.  But I can tell you, I already see a difference in Paige.   Her attitude has improved a lot.  She’s talking back less, rolling her eyes less, and even twisting her hair less.  On the other hand, she’s sucking her thumb just as much.  I’ll take small steps where I can.  I’m just happy to be settling back into a routine again, even if it does mean back to work.

More People Watching December 28, 2010

Now I’m all about comfort.  I’m blogging this wearing pajama pants, a baggy long sleeve t-shirt and slippers.  That’s probably more than you wanted to know, there it is.  I’m sitting around my house with a laptop on my lap watching some iCarly.  There have even been a couple of mornings where Paige and I have gone to Starbucks and Krispy Kreme in our jammies.  It’s OK, they have drive thru’s so we didn’t have to get out.  But for the most part, we don’t really leave the house in pajamas.

So, why is it we saw people walking around Disney World in their pajamas?  No, I’m not kidding, and no, they couldn’t have been anything but pajamas.  In fact, I saw one of the offending pajamas on a clearance rack in Walmart today.  They were most definitely pajamas.  I can see it some times, but to Disney World?  Those pictures of them in Disney are going to be around for a while.  That and lots of people were pointing and laughing.  Obviously though, if you’re wearing pajamas out in public you really don’t care.  It does make me wonder how warm they were.  Orlando was really cold when we were there.  Or the chicks wearing the micro minis.  I don’t see how they could have gotten on and off a ride without flashing the world.  In some cases, I’m surprised we couldn’t see more just from them walking.  There were lots and lots of short skirts.

The other thing we saw was slippers.  Granted, walking around that much can make your feet hurt.  And I’m the first to admit how much I like my slippers.  They’re comfy and warm.  But for walking several miles in a day?  I don’t think so.  That’s just not something I think would be comfy for that long a time.  There’s no arch support and they can’t be all that squishy.  I’m not sure what was worse: the slippers or the 70’s retro wedge boots.  Either looked uncomfortable for the long haul.

I was at the gas station this afternoon and saw a guy getting out of his car.  Let me just say that turning your hat sideways and walking funny doesn’t make you gangsta.  I’m not Catholic and I know that big bling around your neck is a rosary.  It’s less than 50 degrees so the stained up white undershirt you’re wearing leaves you looking cold not cool.  The pants down around your butt?  Yeah, you should really wear some nicer looking underwear if you’re going to do that.  They were stained.  And to add to the image, he got out of a Ford Explorer.

Those are some of my more recent people watching laughs.  Anyone seen anything funny?  I can’t be the only people watcher out there.

Is it winter yet? November 23, 2010

Filed under: Whatever — scifimama @ 6:08 am

Is it even fall yet?  Since the temps have dropped from the high 90’s to the low 80’s, we must have at least gotten to fall.  We’ve had a couple of cold snaps here and there, but nothing has stuck around.  Please don’t get me wrong, I do not like winter.  Winter is cold and cold hurts my arthritis.  More than that, I’m typically cold anyway, so winter just makes it worse.

I may not be a fan of winter itself, but I do like seasons changing.  If it never gets cold, then Spring won’t be very nice and by summer it’ll be hotter than hell here once again.  I know all about global warming and all, but I do like temps to not be in the triple digits four months of the year.  That’s too much, even for me.  Just a few degree cooler and we’ll have some great fall weather.  It can stay like that until Spring.

Just not my day October 28, 2010

We all have them, and for me, today was it.  And yes, I’m blogging this and publishing immediately, so it’s really about today.  Why am I blogging in the middle of the day?  Well, let’s just say the Immodium is finally working.  My day started off wrong.  The rain woke me up off and on all night so I didn’t get much sleep.  The leaking in my bathroom didn’t help either.  The thunder was so bad I was awake around 4-ish.  I dozed off and on until 5:30 then got up for the day.

I immediately started baking cookies for tomorrow and putting the last of the icing on the cookies for today.  Luckily, the icing was already made and colored.  All I had to do was pipe the icing on, wait for it to dry, and put the cookies in baskets.  The power went out while I was doing this.  Twice.  Paige got a little freaked out the first time it happened.  I finally gathered everything up and was about to walk out the door.  That’s when I realized my camera was dead.  It’s fried.  Never to work again.  I spilled water 3 days ago and thought I got it all cleaned up.  Nope, it got farther than I thought, and my camera has been sitting in water for 3 days now.  It’s not going to recover from this one.

I managed to get my cookies safely to school thanks to some creative transporting.  I went to put one of the baskets on the table and it fell over.  The cookies weren’t really damaged, but they weren’t as cute.  After the trick or treating I went to work.  I was only there a few hours when I started running a low grade fever and was spending most of my time in the bathroom.  I decided to call it a day.  The headache I had wasn’t helping matters any.

The only thing I’ve managed to accomplish this afternoon is booking meal reservations at Disney.  That trip is now the week before Christmas and 5 days long.  We’re now staying on property and purchased the dining plan.  Suddenly meals I couldn’t afford before, like lunch with the Princesses, are an option, since they’re part of the dining plan.  I managed to make meal reservations for all 4 days we’ll be in the park.  Only 2 of those are with characters, but all the restaurants are great!  Our plans changed yesterday when Mom got to MWR on base.  They had much better deals on a 4 day ticket than a 2 day ticket.  We got twice the days for half the price.  And they were able to book us a hotel on the property for $10 more a day than a hotel off the property.  Definitely worth it!  I have a 2011 Unofficial Disney Guide and I’m making plans.
